In Year 5, children need to understand that adverbials tell us when, where, why or how a verb happens. They are used to give us more information and make our writing more interesting.
For example:
He tripped and fell because his laces were undone. – because his laces were undone, tells us why it happened (why adverbial)
They parked near the river. – near the river tells us where they were. (where adverbial)
He hung upside down. – upside down tells us how he hung.
(how adverbial)
Yesterday, I got caught in the rain. – Yesterday tells us when it happened. (when adverbial or time adverbial.)
Adverbials can be one word or a phrase, such as ‘yesterday’ or ‘a few days ago’.
Children need to understand the different types of adverbials.
