What is The Parent Teacher?
On the surface, this sounds like a simple question to answer. However, it is a little more complex than it first appears, as we shall see.
The simple answer to this question is,

You can be a Parent Teacher, even if you do not home school
So, this must mean all parents are teachers.
Well technically they should be, but not all parents are, because they do not take on the responsibility of teaching and educating their children at home.
This is because many parents leave their children’s learning or ‘teaching’ to:
- Grandparents,
- Childminders,
- Nannies,
- Schools
- or Boarding schools,
So, they do not actively take part in teaching their children at all. Instead, they monitor their child’s development through report cards and parent meetings, several times a year. But do not actively teach them anything.
So Who Are Parent Teachers?
This leaves everyone else – the parents who take responsibility for their children’s education, including physical, social, emotional development, as well as academic development.
Therefore, parent teachers are parents who actively:
- Choose the right schools for their children,
- Get involved in their children’s homework,
- Make time to read them bedtime stories,
- See their child’s teachers when problems arise
- and Provide their children with support and guidance in all aspects of their life, including their education.
These parents maybe home-schoolers, stay-at-home mums or dads, grandparents or working professionals.
Whatever their background they are actively involved in:
- Teaching their children manners,
- Helping their children develop physical skills, such as how to feed themselves, dress themselves, brush their teeth, learn how to write.
- Help them to develop social skills like making friends
- Help them to develop academic skills by supporting them with homework, preparing them for school tests and so on.
In other words,

Who is this website for?
Now that I’ve made the distinction between who is and who is not a parent teacher, it is easier to establish who this website is for.
Parent teachers are a special breed of parent:
- They take their responsibility of being both a parent and teacher seriously.
- They want their children to have the best and they want their children to succeed.
- They are also willing to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure their children get the best advantage.
- These are the type of parents, kids want and need.
- They are also the type of parents, teachers and schools love.
All parents should be parent teachers, but sadly not every parent is.
How to Become a Better Parent Teacher?
Despite their enthusiasm to provide the best for their child, parent teachers have a serious disadvantage and over time their enthusiasm to help their child diminishes as a result of this. Not because they care less about their children, but because they simply feel helpless and can not access the training teachers receive, hence cannot support their children as easily, as they grow.
As a parent of 3 children and qualified teacher, I’ve spoken to many parents over my career who have wanted to do more for their children. I have now set up this site to support parents who really want to support their children at home.
On this site I will:
- Share with you the teaching methods I use in school;
- Explain how education has changed from when you were last at school
- and Help you prepare your children for their SATs and other school tests.
This site will also be an invaluable resource for parents whose children are unable to attend school for any reason, such as long-term illness, bullying, exclusion and so on.
I will also share my experience on behaviour management and how to encourage your child to take part in learning activities, if they should be reluctant learners.
By providing you with insider information from teacher training programs, I aim to help you become better parent teachers, so that you can help your children throughout their primary years.
This will ensure you are able to give your child a strong educational foundation, before they move into secondary school.
