In primary schools the years are split into 3 stages, Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Key Stage 1 is the second stage of primary school and covers Year 1 and Year 2.
Although this is the second stage, it is typically seen as the first years in academic school.
Year 1 is also the first year for following the National Curriculum (no longer the EYFS). Children will follow this academic programme through to Year 6.
Children’s basic academic skills are tested at the end of Year 2, when they take their first SATs.
Although the Year 2 SATs are planned to be phased out in the next 4 years, schools are still be expected to test children at the end of year 2, but instead children will not have to sit a national test on a particular date, as is the case now.
