In Year 6, children need to understand that there are many words in the English language which sound the same, but are often spelt differently. They also have completely different meanings, such as:
Plain and plane.
If a word has the same spelling and same sound but a different meaning it is called a homonym.
To tie a shoelace.
To wear a tie round your neck.
Some words look the same, but sound differently and are spelt the same. These cause a lot of confusion.
For example:
A bow on a present.
When you take a bow in front of the queen.
Children need to understand the different types of homophones. Their meanings and pronunciations.
The worksheet below will support your child in Year 6’s understanding.
